It Pays To Have Your Head In The Cloud!

Latest IT jobs trends report has just been posted on ITjobswatch.co.uk and makes for some interesting reading. While there is little change in the top-rated technologies or job titles, further down the list shows where the jobs growth and emerging technologies are.

Cloud Computing

Many of the growth skills relate to cloud technology such as Azure and AWS (Amazon Web Services) or languages such as Python or Django. Of all the cloud technologies on the list, the most impressive mover was AWS. There are three different entries for AWS in the top 250 entries.

     AWS Engineer

     AWS Lambda

     AWS DevOps

     AWS Cloud Formation

All three AWS skills have improved on their previous ranking by a minimum of 148 places and in the case of AWS DevOps, a whopping 327 places! The growth in demand for AWS skills applies across the UK with permanent vacancies up in all geographical areas. However, 50% of all available IT Jobs requiring AWS are London based. This is not surprising as AWS is best suited to medium to large enterprises of which there are more in London than elsewhere in the UK. While more AWS jobs are available in London the number of remote positions on offer has also increased which is great news for everyone outside of London.

How to Get Involved in AWS

So how can you give yourself a competitive advantage and get involved with AWS? The easiest route is through gaining hands-on experience and industry certification. Not surprisingly, Amazon offers accreditation in their own product, and it is remarkably affordable. Entry-level certification starts at just USD 100. There are currently four different levels on offer, with a total of 12 different certifications available. Certification is valid for two years, after which you must sit a recertification exam at the same level or complete a higher certification course. You can take the exams online, and there are plenty of study resources available through Amazon too.

AWS Certifications

Practitioner Level: This is the entry-level course and relates to most IT Jobs London from Sales through to development. You can expect to need 80-120 hours of study to pass. It is a generic introduction to AWS and proves you have a detailed understanding of the platform. If you already have solid AWS skills, you can progress directly to the associate level without completing the practitioner level.

Associate: This level is more technical and requires hands-on knowledge of provisioning resources and problem-solving in AWS. There are three different streams at the associate level: Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator, Developer.

Professional: This level requires a comprehensive understanding of how to run, optimise, and troubleshoot solutions within AWS. There are two courses on offer: Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer.

Speciality: As the name suggests, this level targets specialities within AWS. There are six courses: Security, Advanced Networking, Machine Learning, Alexa Skills Builder, Database & data analytics.

Why Certify?

Having an Amazon certification demonstrates you have industry recognised knowledge and expertise within AWS. Even without commercial experience in AWS, provided you have the required IT background, certification can get your foot in the door. For those with experience, it validates your skills and helps you stand out from the crowd.

While certification does validate your AWS knowledge, it also shows a prospective employer that you are self-motivated, committed to the technology and willing to invest in your personal development. These are all desirable attributes from an employer's perspective.
