5 Tips for the Remote IT Job Search

IT is the perfect industry for remote working. So-called Digital Nomads work from a wide variety of global locations picking up assignments when it suits them. Others choose to enjoy living in a rural area and work without the stress of commuting and high rents. There are many upsides to remote working beyond ditching the commute and a collar and tie. Remote working opens up global employment opportunities. You can be based in the UK and working for a US or Australian company. This gives you flexible work hours and greater employment choice.

That leads us to the first hurdle most people encounter, how do you secure a remote IT job?

1. Use Your Network

Remote employment opportunities are far more common now than ever before. One of the best ways to secure a role is through your professional network. Use your network and social media to identify and apply for opportunities. If an existing employee introduces you to an organisation, it will increase your chance of success.

2. Remote Job Search

Companies will advertise remote working roles on standard job boards as well as through IT Recruitment agency. Certain roles such as Cybersecurity, Software Development and DevOps lend themselves to remote working and are also in high demand. Therefore, it may also be possible to apply for a position that is not advertised as remote but then convince the company that remote working would be a better solution.

3. Professional First Impression

Once you apply for a position and are asked for an interview, you need to be prepared. A remote interview for a remote role carries a little more significance than usual. The interviewer is not only judging your interview performance but also your work set up. If possible, you want to demonstrate you have a home office set up or at least a dedicated space within a room. Keep a desk clear and tidy, remove any items from the room that might be deemed offensive. If you house share, let everyone know you will be doing an interview and ask. Them not to interrupt.

4. Participate In Mock Remote Interviews

Practising and preparing for an interview is always a good idea but running through a remote interview with a friend is necessary if you have never done one before. It will allow you to realise the type of information you will need to share and how you can go about doing it. A mock interview will build your confidence and help reduce potentially awkward moments.

5. Be Ready for a Technical Interview

A remote interview is an ideal time to showcase your ability to communicate online effectively. Before the interview, make sure you brush up on your technical skills like sharing screenshots etc. You may want to prepare some files in advance and have relevant examples of your work available.
